How to Evaluate a Domain’s Backlink Profile
A backlink profile is a network of relationships. Due diligence asks whether those relationships are credible, relevant to the domain’s history and likely to remain useful after ownership changes.
Sort by likely importance
Start with the strongest or most authoritative referring pages, then sample the long tail. This prevents a huge low-value link count from hiding the few links that actually matter.
Check relevance
A link is easier to understand when the source, anchor and old destination all fit the former site. Large volumes of unrelated links can indicate manipulation, scraper activity or a previous repurposing.
Inspect anchors and placement
Brand anchors, URLs and descriptive editorial anchors tell a different story from repeated exact-match commercial terms. Also note whether links appear in editorial copy, directories, footers or templates.
Map lost and live links
Historical links can explain past metrics but may no longer exist. Distinguish the links you can verify today from links that only appear in a tool’s historical index.
