How to Check a Domain’s Traffic Before Buying

Traffic data can make a domain look tangible, but third-party estimates are models. A buyer should ask where the traffic likely came from, whether it still exists and whether the old pages or queries make sense for the intended site.

Separate direct evidence from estimates

Analytics access is direct evidence; most marketplace and SEO-tool traffic figures are estimates. Label them accordingly in your decision notes.

Look for trend shape

A stable history, gradual decline and sudden cliff tell different stories. Use search visibility and archived content to investigate why a change may have happened.

Identify query and page concentration

If nearly all historical demand came from one page or one topic, the domain’s apparent traffic value may be less diversified than the headline estimate suggests.

Do not assume transferability

Ownership, content, redirects, link loss and search-system changes can alter performance. Buy a domain because the overall asset makes sense, not because an estimate looks like guaranteed monthly visitors.
