Expired vs Expiring Domains: What the Labels Actually Mean

‘Expired’ is often used loosely, but status matters. A domain can pass through registrar and registry states before it becomes available to someone else.

Expired does not always mean available

A registration can pass its expiration date while the previous registrant may still have renewal or restoration options, depending on the registrar, registry and TLD rules.

Pending delete is a specific late stage

For many gTLD workflows, pending delete is the final period before a domain is purged and can become available again. Exact timing and policies should be confirmed for the relevant TLD.

Auction inventory can bypass the public drop

Registrars and marketplaces may auction expiring names under their own arrangements. That means a desirable domain may transfer to a bidder rather than becoming an ordinary hand-registration opportunity.

Use status as a workflow signal

Status tells you what to do next: monitor, backorder, bid, wait, or register. It does not tell you whether the domain is good.
