How to Vet an Expired Domain Before You Buy

The best time to discover a domain’s problems is before the auction closes or the registration is paid. Vetting turns a metric-heavy shortlist into an evidence-based decision.

Check what the site used to be

Review multiple historical snapshots. Look for a coherent topic and ownership story, abrupt language or industry shifts, mass-generated pages, hacked content, doorway pages or long periods of unrelated use.

Open the backlinks

Inspect actual referring pages rather than stopping at authority scores. Look at relevance, anchors, placement, target URLs, link persistence and whether the strongest links still resolve.

Compare several signals

Age, traffic estimates, indexation and vendor scores can reveal anomalies worth investigating. They should agree with the story you see in the underlying site history and links.

Check name risk

Search for confusingly similar businesses, products and trademarks. SEO strength does not compensate for a name that creates avoidable legal or brand conflict.

Document the decision

Record the intended use, the strongest positive evidence, material risks, unresolved questions and a maximum acquisition price. This makes repeat buying more consistent.
