How to Check an Expired Domain for Spam

Spam checking is a pattern-recognition task. The goal is to find evidence that the domain’s reputation or link graph was manipulated, abused or repurposed in ways that undermine your intended use.

Start with archived content

Look for unrelated industry changes, foreign-language spam, hacked pages, adult or pharmaceutical content, mass doorway pages and obvious templated affiliate pages.

Inspect anchor text

A natural backlink profile often contains brand, URL and topical anchors. Repeated commercial anchors, unrelated languages or patterns tied to historically spammy pages deserve deeper review.

Trace suspicious backlinks

Open linking pages. A high count from low-quality directories, sitewide templates, hacked sites or automatically generated pages is more informative than the aggregate number.

Use automated scores as clues

Spam scores and proprietary cleanliness scores can speed triage, but vendor scoring systems differ. Verify why a domain was flagged—or why it was not.
